Halp, vet
My cat is suddenly showing signs of having a urinary blockage or a urinary tract infection, and the interwebs basically say to find a vet asap. I haven't lived in Austin very long, haven't needed a vet until now, and am not sure where to go. I am very short on cash until Friday, but am not one to wait when it comes to the health of my cats. Can anyone recommend a vet that operates on a sliding scale, or a payment plan, or isn't too expensive, or something? I don't have credit cards, and would not be able to get care credit or anything like that. I live just a little NE of the UT campus. I'm willing to drive a bit if it means a good, trustworthy vet. That said, has anyone had a male cat with a urinary tract infection or blockage, that can give me advice/tips/stories? |

A Priest-Ridden People “History, I believe,” wrote Thomas Jefferson, “furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes.” No country in the West has been so thoroughly priest-ridden as Ireland. The priests have taken not only Ireland’s past, but her future. For the past sixty years, priests and nuns have inflicted physical, mental, and sexual abuse on children in Catholic schools and orphanages. A nine-year effort culminating in a 2,600 page report published last May by Ireland’s Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse, found “a climate of fear, created by pervasive, excessive and arbitrary punishment... Children lived with the daily terror of not knowing where the next beating was coming from.” As we saw in the Archdiocese of Boston, and in other Roman Catholic dioceses in America and Canada, when confronted with charges of sexual abuse of children, religious superiors simply moved the offenders to another location where they were free to abuse again. “There was evidence that such men took up teaching positions sometimes within days of receiving dispensations because of serious allegations or admissions of sexual abuse.” Last week, Ireland outlawed blasphemy. From the new law: Section 36 (1) A person who publishes or utters blasphemous matter shall be guilty of an offense and shall be liable upon on conviction to a fine not exceeding €25,000. (2) For the purposes of this section, a person publishes or utters blasphemous matter if (a) he or she publishes or utters matter that is grossly abusive or insulting in relation to matters held sacred by any religion, thereby causing outrage among a substantial number of the adherents of that religion, and (b) he or she intends, by the publication or utterance of the matter concerned, to cause such outrage. Section 37 (1) Where a person is convicted of an offence under section 36, the court may issue a warrant (a) authorizing any member of the Garda Siochana to enter (if necessary by the use of reasonable force) at all reasonable times any premises (including a dwelling) at which he or she has reasonable grounds for believing that copies of the statement to which the offence related are to be found, and to search those premises and seize and remove all copies of the statement found therein, (b) directing the seizure and removal by any member of the Garda Siochana of all copies of the statement to which the offence related that are in the possession of any person, specifying the manner in which copies so seized and removed shall be detained and stored by the Garda Siochana. (Note: “Garda Siochana” is Irish for “police”.) The first offending document must surely be the Commission to Inquire Into Child Abuse’s report. What a terrible shame it must be to worship a god powerful enough to terrorize children into submitting to torture and rape, but so pitiably weak his reputation must be defended by threat of a fine.

another dentist post
I've searched through the dentist tags and found somethings that were helpful to me, but nothing that was helpful to my boyfriend. I have Guardian dental insurance through my job, he has Assurant through UT. Ideally we'd like to go to the same dentist, but searching through his "find a dentist" thing is pretty limited. Does anyone have any experience with: Omni Dental Group ALAN C WILLIAMS DDS ROSE DENTAL GROUP JAMES T CORDERA? I've read nothing but terrible things about Castle Dental so they're not even included on my list. Thanks. |

Visiting Family
My little brother, who is but 16 years old, is coming to visit me for a week. He will be here from the 11th of August until the 19th. I have no idea what to do to entertain him during this time. He is interested in music, mostly of a hardcore nature and he has a passion for video games (i.e. WOW and Rock Band). He enjoys being out and about, but he is not accustomed to the heat here (we are native Oregonians.) Please send entertainment suggestions..... Thank you. |

Hamburger Bed If big round bed made to look like a delicious cheeseburger isn't food porn, I don't know what is. If you've ever dreamed of diving into a larger-than-life sized hamburger, your dreams could come true. The world famous hamburger bed is on ebay! Imagine having this baby in your house, what a picker-upper. How could you ever have a bad day if you came home to this? Amazing. Edit: FYI, I am not the owner/seller of this bed, so please don't lambaste me for self promotion (or give me undeserved brownie points). :) |

Birth control
Where do we unemployed women with no medical insurance or income go for birth control pills? Is Planned Parenthood my only option? ****edit**** I am aware I can get free condoms just about anywhere, but aside from not wanting to get pregnant, I actually have to be on the pill for medical reasons. And nothing against Planned Parenthood, I was just told that the visits alone are $95. If I had that much extra money I'd just go to my regular doctor. Maybe I've been misinformed? |

2 Questions
Ok, Austin, you have helped me a lot, so I am back. I need a seamstress, I have a dress that needs the straps to be taken in some. I like parmer and 620 area, so someplace close to there that does not charge and arm and a leg would be good. People to stay away from too would be good. Second question. I would like to get a manicure this week. I am on vacation, so I dont mind driving, so anywhere between 620 and downtown. I am not really willing to go further south than downtown. Who do you go to? Price is not a huge concern for me, this is a splurge on myself. :) Thanks in advance! |

Looking for a 1/1?
I'm going to grad school and other tenants fell through, so I need to transfer my lease to someone by mig-August. If you know any UT students or other people who are last-minute apartment hunting, see if they'd be interested! It's a 645sqft 1/1 for $695, and the lease runs until June 30th, 2010: http://austin.craigslist.org/sub/1264749579.html |

I know I'm most likely going to get laughed at for this, but it's worth a shot. I either lost my camera or it was stolen at Speakeasy last Friday on my birthday. Who knows if it is broken/ being used/ in a trashcan. All I really care about is my full memory card. I tried craigslist- is there anywhere else online I could try in case someone has a heart? It was a pink canon powershot, and I hadn't taken the pictures off in awhile. |

leaving the nest!
Hi everyone! My boyfriend and I are planning on moving from the Hell that is Abilene to Austin next month. Currently I'm living with my mom so this whole moving to a new city thing is pretty scary! I live about 4 1/2 hours away so it's difficult to come and look for jobs and all that. I'll be visiting the 15 and 16 with my mom, however. I have an apartment locator helping me but my mom is worried that due to the current economic situation apartments won't even talk to me about leasing if I don't have a job in Austin. I have a job in Abilene, though. Should I bring pay stubs from the job I have now? Basically tell them that I'm going to find a job in Austin ASAP and let my mom co-sign? Do y'all have any advice on this? Know any places that are hiring, especially places where I can apply online in advance? Thanks so much, can't wait to be a part of this beautiful city. :) |

leasing agents
Hey. I'm about to move to Austin for AmeriCorps. I'll be moving in with two other people who are also coming from other states. We know we want to rent/lease a house. Any ideas on good leasing agents? |
